Mavis J. Holland, age 84 of Hendricks, passed away Saturday, Feb. 17 at the Hendricks Hospital. Memorial Service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 22 at Faith Lutheran Church in Hendricks, with Rev. Darren Shaw officiating. Visitation will be Thursday one hour prior to the service. The Houseman Funeral Home, Birk Chapel of Hendricks is entrusted with the arrangements.
Mavis J. Holland was born in Hendricks on June 29, 1933 to Julius and Sophie (Ronning) Johnson. Mavis had four siblings— a sister named Gaella and brothers named Burgess, Arnie and Mark.
Mavis was married to Harry Holland and they had two boys, Steven, the eldest, and Scott. Mavis graduated from Augsburg College with a music major. She went on to be the organist for 20-some years at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Bloomington. She was also a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Hendricks. She worked in diverse industries over the years. All of her jobs had a theme— she worked hard, had fun and was well liked at all of them. She worked for Lifetouch National School Studios, and was, of course, the church organist and she gave piano lessons. She also worked at airport parking as a cashier when she lived in Houston, Texas. She even cashiered for a big grocery chain so when she returned home to Hendricks in 2000 she was 66 and decided to work at the Hendricks Hospital until she retired.
Mavis loved sports whether she was out there cheering us on or watching the local sports teams. She loved the Vikings, Timberwolves, Wild and the Gophers and was a big fan of all of them. Mavis was a hard-working woman with a great sense of humor and a little bit on the feisty side. She was a fantastic wife and mother to her sons. She was a great grandma and loved by everyone who encountered her.
Mavis is survived by her son Steven Holland of Hendricks; granddaughter Joslin Ndiritu and her husband Peter and three great-grandchildren— Jarrin age 15, Josiah age 13, and Jadelyn age 11.
She was preceded in death by her husband Harry and son Scott.
