History points to World War II as the deadliest conflict in human history. With 50 to 85 million fatalities, it included massacres, bombing, starvation, and disease.
May 8 celebrates the end of the war in Europe, known as V-E (Victory in Europe) Day, 1945. Victory in Japan, known as V-J Day, 1945, is celebrated Sept. 2.
Locals tell about their reactions to the Second World War.
