Ruth Jesme, age 98 of Canby, passed away Sat­urday, Oct. 27 at the Hen­dricks Nursing Home in Hendricks. Funeral service was 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2 at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Canby. Visitation was one hour prior to the service at the church. Buri­al was at the Canby City Cemetery. Houseman Fu­neral Home-Birk Chapel of Canby was entrusted with the arrangements.
Ruth Harriet Jesme was born on the family farm near Gary, South Dakota on Wednesday, July 14, 1920 to parents Peter and Ma­bel (Paulson) Jesme. She was one of eight children born to the Jesme fam­ily. Ruth was baptized and confirmed at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church in Canby, which is now is Our Sav­iour’s Lutheran Church.She was raised on the farm and attended Rock Valley Country School, District 40. While in high school she was a member of the or­chestra and played violin. Ruth and her peers were awarded high honors in multiple competitions held in the area. Ruth graduated from GaryHigh School in 1939 and continued her education in Mankato at business school.
Upon completion of busi­ness school, Ruth moved to Minneapolis and was em­ployed by Northern States Power, where she was known to be a very meticu­lous secretary who wasn’t afraid to step up to any task and help anyone out. In the early 1970s, Ruth returned home to help on the farm and care for her brother and elderly mother. In 2011, she moved off the farm and into Canby to be with her sister Deloris, and in 2013, they both moved to Lincoln Lane Villa in Hendricks.
Ruth loved to read, es­pecially about health and nutrition and natural rem­edies. Caring for others was a true passion and she was one to rarely complain. She was a member of Our Sav­iour’s Lutheran Church.
She will be lovingly missed by her sister De­loris Griffith of Hendricks and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings Earnest Jesme, Ma­mie (Arnold) Palm, Gladys Jesme, Pearl (Donald) Roske, Bernice (Palmer) Severson and Robert (Lou­ise) Jesme; and brother-in-law Calvin Griffith.
