Merlyn Edward Schwarz was born Aug. 30, 1932 to Julius and Jeanette (Van Meeteren) Schwarz in Sheldon, Iowa. He was raised near Sheldon, where he attended country school. In 1952 he was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served his country during the Korean Conflict. During this time he was stationed in Austria with the 510th Field Artillery BA Battalion Battery C. In 1954 he was honorably discharged and returned home.
Merlyn was united in marriage to Lenore Jansma on May 24, 1956 in a private ceremony in Spirit Lake, Iowa. They were blessed with four children. They lived on a farm by Shaokotan Lake, where they raised their children, and later retired in Hendricks. Later, Merlyn turned the farm over to his son Randy, who was currently crop-sharing. Lenore passed away Aug. 4, 2017. Merlyn entered the Hendricks Nursing Home in June 2017, where he passed away Friday, Jan. 18 at the age of 86 years, four months and 19 days.
Merlyn enjoyed farming and gardening. His grandchildren were his pride and joy and his face would light up when he saw them. His dream for all of his children and grandchildren was to receive a college education, since back in his day he was only able to obtain an eighth grade education.
Grateful for having shared Merlyn’s life are his three children— Randall (Leslie) Schwarz of Hendricks, Jan Schwarz of Phoenix, Arizona, and Darla (Jeff) Lasnetski of Willmar; daughter-in-law Pam Schwarz of Tyler;15 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Merlyn was preceded in death by his son Ronald Schwarz; parent Julius and Jeanette Schwarz; two brothers, Wallace and James Schwarz; one sister, Donna Gebauer; and one grandson, Nathan Schwarz.
Blessed be his memory.
