Old-fashioned butter demo

January 31, 2019

For 20 years, DuWayne Oien of Hendricks, one of 20 members of a Living History Club, has demonstrated old-fashioned buttermaking, along with other reenactments, at the annual Living History Fair held at Lake Area Technical Institute Student Center in Watertown, South Dakota. DuWayne uses a wooden stick called a dasher, a quart of cream and a crock. The moving of the dasher agitates the cream and the chemical process of making butter takes place. A quart of cream makes about a pound of butter.
