On March 2, 1998, the first Read Across America was celebrated; since then, it has been held annually. The purpose is to encourage children to read more books and also to get them excited about reading. On this day, schools, libraries, hospitals, bookstores, churches, and some businesses host their own events.
Joni Dagel, Hendricks Public Library librarian, was promoting book-reading by giving treats to anybody who came in with a donation of a new pair of socks for a needy family.
