Girls win, boys second at RTR Invitational golf

April 27, 2012

Once again, Rebel golfers were greeted to miserable weather conditions while participating in the RTR Invitational Golf Tournament this past week.

Lincoln girls shot a 213 (nine holes) for first place honors. Minneota was second with a team score of 218 while Canby was third with 219 and RTR was incomplete. Leading the Rebels was Malorie Midtaune with a 51. Kyra Gores was second with a 53, Taylor Ness third with a 54, Chelsey Benz fourth with a 55 while Danielle Buseth, Maranda Jerzak and Haley Skorczewski recorded 56s.

Commenting on the course conditions, Coach Gile noted, over the years we’ve played in worse conditions but, generally speaking, this is something we, as coaches, really try to avoid.

The weather report indicated warmer conditions later in the afternoon, but instead things got worse. The meet was schedule for 18 holes but within an hour of competition we shortened the event to nine holes for the girls. The boys were playing in threesomes and were further into the match and finished the entire 18-hole tournament.

There are going to be times, especially later in the season, that we’ll need to tee-up in really difficult conditions. The boys state tournament last year was played in a heavy rainstorm. Our fundraisers over the past years have given the team some warm weather gear but, without a doubt, we could use a shopping spree at Cabela’s.

RTR won the boys event with a team score of 327. Lincoln HIwas second with a 373, Canby was third with a 387 and Minneota fourth with a 388. Gile noted he was really pleased with our boys’ performance as they took 16 strokes off their earlier 18-hole performance atMarshall. This is a rebuilding year and our goal, once again, is to get all the freshmen shooting in the 40s and give Jeramie Blegen and Jeff Gladis an opportunity for state competition.

Jeff Gladis led the team in scoring with an 18-hole score of 80 and placed third in individual competition. Jeramie Blegen was second in team scoring with a 90; Jonathan Piehl was third with a 100, Trysten Studemann was fourth with a 103 and Jordan Twedt fifth with a 110. Eighth grader Ryan Twedt also competed and had a nine-hole score of 56. Gile noted the boys are working hard on improving their swings and technique. They’ll have some ups and downs along the way, but you need to give them a lot of credit for their improvement.

Once again, elementary basketball teams were in action Thursday evening, Feb. 16.

The bleachers were filled with family, friends and school supporters and the smell of popcorn filled the school. It was a good feeling to see the bleachers full again. It was even more fun to see the students work hard and work together as a team.

The basics have to come first in order to build a good foundation. The coaches have done a good job teaching the basics of dribbling, freethrows, good defense, correct form when shooting, etc. Gary and Sherri Johnson coach the fourth grade girls. Chad Olsen and Jenai Wright coach the fifth grade girls and David Blees and Gary Johnson, the sixth grade girls.

Thursday evening the Hendricks Grizzlies played the Deubrook Dolphins. The fourth grade team won 24-8, the fifth grade team fell 9-5 and the sixth grade team won 8-4.

The fans came out for the Grizzlies’ basketball game Thursday night, Feb. 16.

Coach Chad Olsen said the girls have played about 20 games. “They have a few left,” he said, “and tournaments start the beginning of March.”

Help support our school by watching for an expanded schedule of events in 2012. These kids are our future. Don’t let them down because they are not going to let us down.

Sixth grade girls basketball team

February 10, 2012

The Hendricks sixth grade Lady Grizzlies—Bailey Jensen, Greta Johnson, Autumn Buchholz, Gabby Blees and Rachael Colgrove, pictured above—took third place at a recent tournament in Pipestone. Their defense was awesome, as no team they played scored more than 18 points. With only five players from the sixth grade, it’s a big challenge for the girls, but every game they step up and play their hearts out. It’s great to watch the team play together.
