Phone scams ever-changing, target area residents frequently

Minnesota Attorney General Lori Swanson is asking Minnesotans to step up their vigilance in preventing phone scams that become more and more a part of daily life. The unwanted phone calls are more than just a nuisance. A recent study by the spam-fighting phone app Truecaller reveals that Americans were scammed out of $9.2 billion in 2016. And it doesn’t just happen “someplace else.” Tyler Police Chief John Spindler said many scam attempts get reported to his department as well as the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department on a regular basis.
“Phone scams are common and the strategy of them changes frequently,” Spindler said.
Spindler said the culprits are hard to track down.
