Howard Bernell Nissen, age 88 of Kasson, formerly of Pipestone, passed away at the Mayo Clinic Hospi­tal-Rochester, St Mary’s Campus, on Feb. 22.
A funeral service for Howard will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 12 at Danebod Lutheran Church in Tyler. Interment will be at the Danebod Lutheran Cemetery after the church service.
Howard was born to Arthur and Clara (Jensen) Nissen on Jan. 21, 1930 in Tyler. He was raised on the family farm located out­side of Tyler. He graduated from Tyler High School, and began working at the Radisson Hotel in Minne­apolis. He married Dorene L. Loeck of Marshall on Jan. 3, 1952. They made their home in Tyler, where their son Craig Howard Nissen was born.
In Tyler, Howard worked for the REA as a lineman and a crew foreman un­til 1961. At that time, he and his family moved to Pipestone, where Howard entered into a bulk oil de­livery business. In follow­ing years, he and his son Craig expanded that busi­ness to include servicing Flandreau, South Dakota and the surrounding areas. They also owned several self-service car washes and laundries, an auto re­pair and towing business, and several Food Shop convenience stores.
Howard retired in 1995. During his retirement he continued to enjoy many of his favorite hobbies, which included hunting, fishing, trap and skeet shooting, with his friends and family. He was an active member of the Masons and the El Riad Shriners for 57 years. In 2012, he and Dorene moved to Kasson so they would be closer to their family.
Howard is survived by his son Craig and daugh­ter-law Sharla of Byron; two granddaughters, Rene Millner and her husband Steve of Crosslake and Do­nell Nolting and her hus­band Erick of Alexandria; and three great-grand children, Hailey, Blake and Kaitlyn Millner. Howard is also survived by his three siblings, Arthur Lee Nis­sen and his wife Diane of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Donna Svendsen of Tyler, and Anitra Lewko of Min­neapolis.
Howard, was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Dorene Nissen, and his parents.
