John K. Sorensen of Sun City, Arizona passed away on Feb. 11 of heart failure. His wife Sheila was by his side.
John was born in Refu­gio, Texas. He was a gradu­ate of Tyler High School, a graduate of Grandview Jr. College in Des Moines, Iowa, and a graduate of the U of M-Minneapolis. John worked for Sears Manage­ment in Minneapolis and Chicago, Illinois for 25 years and retired in 1990. He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1998 as a Chief Petty Officer, after serv­ing 24 years— two years active duty and 22 years in the Naval Reserve Unit, Great Lakes, Illinois.
In 2003, John and his wife Sheila moved from Schaumburg, Illinois to Sun City, Arizona for the winter months. Summer months were spent on their boat on Lake Michi­gan and later in a home in Crivitz, Wisconsin.
In 2015, John and Sheila became full-time residents of Sun City. Hobbies for John were motorcycling with friends, golfing, boat­ing, hunting, trap shooting, fishing, traveling and, most of all, his 2005 Corvette. He was an avid fan of all foot­ball and basketball events. John was a member of the Moose Lodge, the Elks, the American Legion, the Sun City Corvette Club and a volunteer with the Sun City Prides for 10 years.
John is survived by his wife of 56 wonderful years, Sheila (Schardin) Sorensen. He could always make her laugh and put everything in perspective. Other survivors include his brother Tom of Fort Mill, South Carolina; Tom’s wife Valerie and their sons Christopher and Trever; Trever’s wife Heather and their two children; neph­ews Joshua Schardin of Sanibel Island, Florida, and Matt Schardin of Al­bany, New York.
John was preceded in death by his parents Har­old J. and Evelyn Sorensen, and his in-laws, Elmer and Fern Schardin.
A memorial service and interment will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 19 at the National Memo­rial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N. Cave Creek Rd., Phoenix, AZ. Arrangements by Menke Funeral and Cre­mation Center; condolenc­es may be shared at
